What is self love? Well, according to Google, it is a regard for one's well being and happiness. Contrary to popular beliefs, self-love is a basic human necessity that everyone needs an appropriate amount of. We like to believe that self-love means only narcissism, but that is far from the truth. In this case, we are talking about knowing and accepting your identity confidently, becoming the best version of yourself, and being mindful of the type of people we surround ourselves with who are either adding to or subtracting from our self worth and ability to embrace who we are. In fact, not knowing self-love is actually what attracts you to those that are narcissistic and toxic.

Self love is something that requires you to accept the way God created you, from your physical make up to your personality, instead of what society tells you what you need to be. It is something that requires you to set boundaries when there are red flags that screams "this person is not good for me. It is something that requires you to be okay even if others won't accept you because of judging before actually getting to know the real you. It gives you the confidence to not depend on the validation of others but instead on who God says you are. When you don't know self-love, you can become a doormat to others, stay in places and crowds you don't belong in, and do things you normally wouldn't.

Self love doesn't mean you don't care about or have concern for another but that you have respect for yourselves and others. There are boundaries that are not allowed to be crossed, and you have courage and the will power to put your foot down when needed.

I express the importance of a healthy self-love in my new poetry book, "Her Time To Speak", through a collection of poems along with pieces on life, relationships, and encouragement through my opinion and experiences as a young adult woman. These poems are engaging, transparent, and will leave you with a sense of empowerment. Her Time To Speak will be released August 17th and is available for pre-order on Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, and other bookstores.
